8 reflection questions



Application
Algebra and Geometry can be used very well where I can incorporate this technology. This activity can be conducted in 15-20 minutes.

First, provide some details regarding:


  • Learners: My learners will be 10th and 11th grade? This activity should be used and learned by high school students that range from 16-18.
  • Learning outcomes: My students will learn how to do different types of algebraic expressions and proofs through this activity.At the end of this activity, students will be able to figure out formal proofs and know what formulas to use.
  • Assessment: Some ways I will know that my students have learned is by checking their progress in homework or test grades? I will know that my content was effective towards the students is by seeing if their test grades are increasing or if they are asking for extra help.



Second, break down your activity into a timeline of planned events and procedures. Here you should describe what students and the teacher will be doing chronologically during the activity. Below is one of the good examples from previous reflections:


  • The lesson would begin with introducing the students to the ixl which is a free website that can help them not only in math but in other subjects. This would only take a minute or two because the website explains why they got the question wrong and shows step by step on how or why that is the answer.
  • The students would then spend the next 10 minutes exploring ways to solve algebraic equations that they had already been working with in class.
  • After,the students will be given 5 minutes to complete the individual assessment.
  • Then, while other students are finishing up their work, the others will then either work on other assignments to get ahead of class or help their fellow peers what new techniques they have learned about navigating and solving algebraic equations.



Reflection
Considering your learning activity described above, write two paragraphs or three for each section below addressing the questions. It may be helpful to keep in mind the followings when reflecting:


  1. How well the use of this technology may support your teaching strategies in this activity.
  2. How effectively the use of this technology may enhance students' understanding of and learning from your particular content in this activity.


IXL is very effective when it comes to technology since is it free and easy to use. The activity goes step by step to teach students how to correctly solve a mathematical equation. It will enhance and get them ready for the final test that is at the end of the year. By them understanding the content from particular problems in this activity. At the end it will gain them knowledge and confidence for challenging problems. Teachers can use any website that will prepare their students based on what they are learning in the classroom.
--Pedagogical-Content:


Your pedagogical content knowledge refers to your understanding of teaching strategies that are specific to a content area. That is the knowledge about choosing appropriate pedagogies for teaching a particular content Example: Using drill-and-practice to teach math problem solving. This strategy however may not necessarily be effective for other content areas.
 


 


Now, forget about the technology for a while…..Just tells us about your teaching strategies that you employ in your activity (e.g., analogies, demonstrations, illustrations, examples, explanations, group work, drill-practice, simulations, role-play, lecturing, self-guided learning, inquiry-based learning, problem based learning or etc). Specifically:


  • What are your strategies and why do you think your strategies are appropriate to teaching this specific content?  What makes you believe it would help your students comprehend this particular content? Give specific examples from your described activity.
  • What would be some conceptions and pre-conceptions that students of different ages and backgrounds bring with them when learning this particular content? What would you be concerned about students' prior knowledge, experiences, motivation? Again focus on the content and your teaching strategy, not the technology!
The strategies I am using based on the specific content will be each day of the week will be something different. Mondays will be formulas because in order to start a problem you need to know which one to use. Tuesdays will be Definitions and terms so when they read a problem they know what it is asking. Wednesdays will be examples of different problems. Thursdays will be a game based on groups when I split teams up to make it fun while they learn. Fridays will be catch up day if they need any help or refresh their minds on some stuff. Some students learn faster than others, some may not have a lot based on their background. It is important for me to understand my students on a personal level for me to accommodate them. Their motivation might be hard to get if I do not get their attention from the start of the semester.

Your technological pedagogical knowledge refers to your understanding of technologies for particular learning tasks, your ability to choose technologies based on its fitness, your knowledge of pedagogical strategies, and your ability to apply those strategies for use of technologies
 
Example: Selecting IXL for facilitating student generated debate. IXL here is the technology that supports the main pedagogy-group discussion/debate.


 


In the previous section, you talked about your instructional strategies. Keeping these strategies you stated in mind, now tell us how the technology is used in your activity.  Specifically:


  • What main instructional strategies would this technology use serve in your activity? How would using the technology support the way you teach this activity? Please give examples and be specific to your described activity. Think about your main teaching strategies that this technology would support.
  • What different classroom management strategies you might need to consider when using this technology in the activity? Give examples and be specific to your described activity.
IXL will serve as a guide to students that are having trouble with a particle subject or problem. This technology helps them with all that and follows the students along if they do not understand something. There are different categories of math based on what I am teaching. So Algebra one there are more categories that can be broken down based on what students are learning in that week whether it is slope or Pemdas. No matter what it is, IXL goes step by step written so students can see how they can improve on.

Your technological pedagogical content knowledge refers to your understanding of how teaching and learning from content may change when technology used and is our knowledge about selecting technologies that suits, support, and enhances teaching strategies and learning activities in your particular content area. It is your understanding of teaching strategies to effectively teach the particular content and help student conceptual difficulties in this content by meaningfully incorporating technologies.
 
Example: Using a flash card app on iPad as a means to aid students memorize words and definitions in language learning. iPad app is here chosen as a tool to support the pedagogy around instant feedback, quick repetition, and individualized learning. These are some of the strategies used in language learning content area.


 


Now, let’s focus on the content you’re teaching in your activity. Think about your decisions to incorporate this technology and the teaching strategies in relation to your particular content area. Tell us specifically about:


  • How would using this technology enhance the way the content is represented in your activity (e.g. demonstrations, explanations, examples, illustrations, analogies, and etc.)? That is why you think the selection and the pedagogical use of this technology may enhance what you teach (the content in your activity). Give specific examples from your activity to support your answer and keep in mind the learning objectives that you stated previously. 
  • In what different ways students practice or understand the content in your activity that would otherwise not be possible without the use of the technology? In addition to motivational benefits, what else can students do with this technology as they are learning the content?
Smart boards are a good source to use so that all students can see what they are learning. So when I upload IXL and teach it, the students will see how it works and all the functions that come with it when I show them. This will serve as another tutor or teacher outside of class if they choose to use this resource. Some examples are when there are algebraic expressions that become challenging, PEMDAS will help them and guide them through any problem. Going through each step, it will show them that when you break down a problem, it becomes easier. If students cannot get a hold of a computer I will download worksheets for them as extra work to help them prepare. The website provides tools to do that so every student can succeed.

3D Printing


In the Smithsonia link they are stating no matter what grade level it is, K-12 learning is going to be exciting and possible which makes the teaching valuable to the students when they are engaged and give them an opportunity to explore these 3D objects which can help them observe and use their critical skills. By building and using the 3D printer, students are able to visualize the product which will help with their observational skills. Educators will then be able to use technology in the classrooms that will teach and make school a better learning environment.

The link in 3D Printers in schools, the role of this printer in education is to equip people to understand how this machine works and that there is new technology that is important that will help prepare them for the world. Since technology is evolving, the 3D Printer shows students trial and error to demonstrate shapes that can be effective that will deliver the curriculum. The manufacturers and staff that participated got support to use the printer effectively.

There are many teaching approaches that educators can use when it comes to using technology. For the classrooms for example science they could print out animals so the students can see the structure of these animals. In engineering projects can be made to expand a student’s knowledge. For math, graphs can be printed, Pythagoras Theorem and Trigonometry.

TPACK/WRIGHT

In today's discussion we learned in two groups what TPACK stood for and how we can implement it in the classroom. In today's group will all found out that in today's classrooms teachers only cover two of the three. TPACK stands for Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge. We came up with two examples for this scenario. One which how students that are doing alternative certification may know the technology and content but do not know the pedagogy part or how teachers that have been teaching for years may know pedagogy and the content but since technology is evolving they might not know as much about the products. Another reason would be the school may not have enough funding for technology.

In the Wright article that I read I learned that teacher educators can initiate change and address these barriers through implementation of technology integration requirements in teaching and learning. Teacher educators should also focus on improving the perseverance of teacher's attitudes toward technology's benefits in teaching and learning. It also showed how technology can expand a student's mind to be more creative and think quickly. Teacher's can also learn how to introduce it to the classroom at an early stage to make it easier and a better environment to learn.






We also discussed this picture which made it better to understand TPACK and shows that all teachers need to be balanced and have all three and only a very few teachers have this and that is a small percentage.

4 Articles, 3 paragraphs

In today's society, technology has become a daily part in our lives such as different materials that we use. In this modern day of age, it is becoming a bigger use in the workforce as well in our personal life around us.




In the first article I found it interesting that when they compared paper versus tablet the researchers did not find a major difference in either one of them on which people preferred. It may seem hard to understand since you see everyone on their phones, labtops, ipads, via etc. Devices like these show that technology is evolving and we are using them more and more than paper but this paper shows that either one that was used nothing was significantly better than the other.


The second article was the Teacher Survey which in my opinion before I read it I thought the Tablet survey would be a major impact but turned out to be the same for the paper and tablet. It ties in to how technology is evolving. Devices in the classroom are important and can help with the teaching process and help students learn better as studies has shown. As new objects are being produced, the harder it will be to get jobs because robots or devices are now able to take over. So beginning at a young age for the students can help them get an edge in the work field so they know what to expect.


The third article was based on 25 of the top best inventions ever made by man-kind. These new products have either been released to the public or they are working on them to make better. Either way these products are showing how technology is advancing very quickly and can give you a sense of where the world would look like years from now. Technology is only going to develop faster and better and shows that there is no limit on what the future holds for the society.


The fourth article talks about future technology and devices that are still being discussed on whether or not it will be a part of someone's household and that it will take some time on getting used to.


In Albert Einsteins's quote I am In the middle on both agreeing and disagreeing because the positives are how everything is becoming easier for people and we do not necessarily have to break a sweat for what we are trying to do. Machines are becoming useful to do the work for people and the researchers and scientists who are inventing these are smart and getting creative with things that open the world's eyes on what is in store for the near future. The downside is since everything will become easy for people they take advantage and become lazy with the lives and are not as knowledgeable since they do not look at their surroundings simply because they are too involved in their devices when walking from place to place. Face to face conversation is slowly dying and we are not enjoying life around us.
